Retro-modern Design with Outstanding Performance

It is a natural human impulse to appreciate beauty. Bissell is well aware of its customers’ aesthetic preferences and kept this factor in mind while designing Air220.

Unlike many air purifiers available in the market, it is a medium-sized air purifier with a sleek black/grey design and remarkable performance. It uses an industrial centrifugal fan to draw air from the front fabric panel and delivers filtered air from the top which means I could place it near a wall and will not affect its air circulation.

At the top-middle of the front, there is a small LED matrix display. It shows the automatic mode status (a capital letter “A” will be displayed for the Auto Mode), filter life status (“F1” or “F2” will be displayed if the filters need to be changed), and 5 fan speed levels.

Below the matrix display is a colored LED bar that changes color (Blue, Yellow & Red) depending on the indoor air quality. Blue is good, Yellow is moderate and Red is poor.

A single soft-touch dial on the top serves as both a dial and a button. It has a holding handle on the back and a cord wrapper at the tip to organize the 6-inch power cord. In my opinion, the design of the discrete cord wrapper on the back panel is an excellent idea. It is rare to see this design in other air purifiers. So, I don’t need to deal with the power cord of the Bissell Air220.

Dominant Features of the Bissell Air220 Air Purifier

Bissell Air220 Air Purifier FiltrationUnique 3-Stage Powerful Physical Filtration

The Bissell Air220 air purifier has three stages of physical filtrations. Instead of a 3-in-1 composite filter,  the Bissell Air220 uses two separate thick filters. One is the HEPA filter with a pre-filter sheet. Another one is the activated carbon filter.

  • The fabric pre-filter is the first layer of protection. It traps pollutants like pollen, pet fur, hair, etc. This filter, along with the HEPA filter, is replaceable. Velcro strips connect the pre-filter sheet to the HEPA filter.
  • Medical grade H13 HEPA filter serves as the primary particle filter in the second stage of filtrations. It captures 99.97% of airborne particles smaller than 0.3 microns. These particles include dust, germs, and smoke particles. The filter is useable for up to 6 months.
  • The third stage is a honeycomb-structured carbon odor filter. It contains thousands of activated carbon pellets that absorb household odors, pet odors, cooking odors, gases, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Replacement Filter Options

The pre-filter sheet can be rinsed but I’d recommend replacing it together with the HEPA filter. Both the HEPA and carbon filters on the purifier have filter replacement indicators. When you see an “F1” on the LED display at the top front, that means you have to replace the HEPA filter. When you see an “F2”, you have to replace both the HEPA and the activated carbon filter. The activated carbon filter can also last up to six months, like the HEPA filter.

There is a HEPA with Pre-Filter and Activated Carbon Filter pack sold on Amazon for about $50. So, when you see an “F2” on the display of the air purifier, you could buy this filter pack to replace all the filters.

HEPA with Pre-Filter and Zeolite Pet Odors Filter pack (Image Source: Amazon.com)

There is another option for me to deal with the pet odors in my house. I found a HEPA with Pre-Filter and Zeolite Pet Odors Filter pack on Amazon. I could use a zeolite pet odors filter instead of the activated carbon filter. The zeolite pet odors filter could be better for capturing and controlling odors from pets than traditional carbon filters. However, this filter pack is a bit more expensive than the above-mentioned activated carbon filter pack. It is sold on Amazon for about $60.

Some users argue that it is very difficult to buy replacement filters because they are always out of stock. However, I didn’t find it difficult to buy the replacement filters. I was able to buy them on Amazon when I needed to replace them. Also, they are all available now on Amazon and Bissell.com as I’m writing.

When I was going to replace the filters, they can be accessed from the front panel with very clear instructions and arrows for replacement. Here, I’ve embedded a video on how to replace the replacement filter.

How to Replace and Reset the Filters on your BISSELL Air220

Ideal Large Area Coverage

Bissell Air220 Air Purifier CoverageWhen buying an air purifier, the most crucial factor to consider is the size of the space where it works best. Keep in mind that an air purifier is desired to be AHAM verified. Now the question arises what is AHAM certification? It simply means that the product has undergone standardized laboratory testing. AHAM certifies the air purifier for its ability to remove smoke, pollen, and dust.

AHAM approved the Bissell Air220 air purifier to filter rooms up to 1252 square feet per hour with one air change.

Moreover, it filters 626 square feet per hour with two air changes; 417 square feet per hour with three air changes, and 259 square feet at 4.8 air changes per hour.

Automated Smart CirQulate System

The Bissell Air220 air purifier owns CirQulate System I’ve seen very rare in other air purifiers. This system provides optimum filtrations when set to Auto Mode.

Bissell Air220 Air Purifier CirQulateIt detects the presence and level of VOCs in your home’s air using the Air220’s VOC sensor. However, it requires about 30 minutes to calibrate your home’s air quality after initially powering the air purifier ON. Then, its colored light air quality feedback indicates the air quality level of your home.

In addition, when the air quality decreases, this automated smart CirQulate system responds by increasing the fan speed.

Automatic Night Mode With Low Noise Level

Bissell Air220 features an automatic Night Mode. It has a light sensor to detect the brightness in the environment. When I go to sleep and turn off the lights in my bedroom, the light on the digital display of the Bissell Air220 will be turned off automatically. Also, the fan speed will be changed to the lowest whisper-quiet level which is about 34dB.

AHAM Certified with Three Years Warranty

The Bissell Air220 air purifier is AHAM verified for 167 CFM smoke, 178 CFM pollen, and 177 CFM dust clean air delivery rates (CADR). CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) is a unit of measurement for how quickly air flows through a purifier. The purifier with the highest CFM is usually the best because faster airflow means more air changes per hour.

Furthermore, it has three years warranty. It only applies to products for personal use, not for commercial or rental purposes. Besides, it does not cover fans or general maintenance items like filters.

Intuitive Control Dial

Intuitive Control Dial – Easily adjust fan speed, power, and filter reset

Another quality that differentiates it from its competitors is its single soft dial knob that controls the Bissell Air220 air purifier. You can easily adjust fan speed, power, and filter reset by twisting the dial and single button control.

Price: $236.89, a Bit Pricey?

You can buy a Bissell Air220 air purifier for $236.89 on Amazon. However, it might be a little bit pricey compared with similar impressive air purifiers. Despite this, the Bissell Air220 continues to outperform many other air purifiers. So if you have a crush on the brand, this is an excellent air purifier.

My Verdict

Bissell Air220 Air Purifier Rating

Overall, the Bissell Air220 Air Purifier might be a better choice to control home odors, odors from pets, dust, and VOCs. I think it is suitable for a small-medium area for 3x or 4x ACH. Its simple intuitive control dial design allows me to control all the functions of this air purifier. Thousands of Bissell Air220 air purifiers are sold worldwide and it obtains a 4.7 out of 5 stars global rating on Amazon.

Admittedly, for marketing hype, there are no fancy filters. It also lacks some features I’d like, such as a child lock or remote control. Also, some users said its 4 little legs cannot be removed. It is quite heavy and hard to move without wheels, but there’s not much to complain about the product.

There is only one color which is black for Bissell Air220. If you don’t like black, I’d recommend another model Bissell Air320 which is white and its coverage is as large as 1770 sq ft for 1x ACH. However, Air320 costs $100 more than Air220.

One more thing for pet lovers. Personally, as an animal lover, I love the Bissell brand because it established the Bissell Pet Foundation which supports animal welfare organizations. So, while you’re buying a Bissell’s air purifier, you’re supporting the Bissell Pet Foundation as well. In the nutshell, if a compromise on its cons is possible, the Bissell Air220 air purifier is highly recommended based on its characteristics.
