When it comes to reviewing a product, certain things must be taken into consideration if we must arrive at an objective conclusion. Therefore, a review of the Levoit Core 300 Air Purifier would equally follow the same template. Issues that would be taken into account include the following:
- The quality of product relative to others in the same segment
- How does the price of the Levoit Core 300 Air Purifier compare against others
- What stands it apart from others
- The pros and cons
- My final verdict
Firstly, let’s discuss the importance of an air purifier and what purpose it is meant to serve, so we can be able to make an informed decision about the Levoit Core 300 Air Purifier.
Why Do You Need an Air Purifier?
An air purifier also referred to as an air cleaner is a modern device to remove various kinds of contaminants from the air, within a confined space, to enhance the air quality and make it healthier.
In essence, the device is marketed purposely for its health benefits and while it is recommended for everyone, asthmatics and allergy sufferers will consider it critically important in reducing or eliminating tobacco smoke as well as toxins, pollutants, and allergens.
The Quality and Features of The Levoit Core 300 Air Purifier
Levoit is the number one selling air purifier brand in the United States between 2019 and 2020. Levoit Core 300 air purifier ranks as one of the top air purifier pick of 2021 at Wirecutter. This product has some unique features that gave it an edge over many others and they are listed below:
- 3-Stage H13 True HEPA Filtration System
Airborne contaminants are known to cause nasal congestion, sneezing, and other allergies. To prevent such, the H13 True HEPA Filter combines with Pre-Filter as well as the High-Efficiency Activated Carbon Filter to trap up to 99.97% of all airborne particles, including those as minute as 0.3 microns like dust, pollen, smoke, or odor. Moreover, this 3-stage filter could remove 99.99% of bacteria, mold, and H1N1 (SGS verified) as well as 99.9% of viruses.
The first stage of its filtration system is the nylon mesh Pre-filter. It can capture larger particles, dust, lint, fibers, and pet fur. I usually use a soft brush or vacuum hose to clean it every 2-4 weeks to maintain its effectiveness. Remember not to use water or other liquids to clean it, otherwise, you will destroy the functions of this filter.
The second stage is the H13 True HEPA Filter which could remove bacteria, mold, pollen, and pet dander. Unfortunately, it is not a permanent filter, I can’t clean it and have to replace the entire filter every 6-8 months.
The last stage is the Activated Carbon Filter. Compared to other ordinary air purifiers, it is a layer of 10x more activated carbon. This activated carbon filter is actual granulated pieces of charcoal that could absorb smoke, fumes, VOCs, pet odors and cooking smells, etc. Similar to the HEPA filter, it is not a permanent filter and has to replace regularly.
- Variety of Customized Replacement Filter Choices
Individual needs differ and it is quite exciting to note that Levoit 300 air purifier offers diverse filters. Apart from the original filter, there are three more customized replacement filters. They are Pet Allergy Filter, Toxin Absorber Filter, and Smoke Remover Filter.
Pet Allergy Filter is a 3-stage True HEPA filter. It neutralizes ammonia which comes from pet dander and other kinds of unpleasant odors. It is an excellent customized replacement filter for pet lovers and someone who suffers from pet allergies. For instance, I have a lovely cat, and some of my friends and family members who suffer from cat allergies finally feel better when they come to my house with the Pet Allergy Filter.
Toxin Absorber Filter is also a 3-stage True HEPA filter. Compared to the original filter, it works better in removing VOCs, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide which come from wildfire smoke, fossil fuel, smoke and vehicle exhaust, etc. It is perfect for filtering toxins, smog, and VOCs.
Unlike the other two customized replacement filters, the Smoke Remover Filter is a 4-stage True HEPA filter. It is the best replacement filter among them. The improved 4-stage design and dual-sided Pre-Filter are more effective against ash and pollution spread by wildfire smoke. It features an Outer Pre-filter and an Inner Pre-filter that make this smoke remover filter ideal against wildfire smoke, ash, etc.
- Ozone Free Air Purification
Unlike some other air purifiers, the makers of the Levoit Core 300 air purifier avoided the use of UltraViolet-C (UV-C) light — a method of air cleaning that research has proven to be unhealthy because they emit harmful ozone as well as other secondary pollutants.
- Performance Rating and Medium-Sized Coverage
This air purifier can yield fresh air within minutes of being powered on due to its Core 300 True High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Purifier.
It features VortexAir Technology which is an air circulation technology that could increase indoor air circulation and purify rooms faster. The use of VortexAir Technolgy and 360° air intake design could create an air vortex that increases the air purifier’s power and efficiency, distributing more clean air throughout the room.
I recommend putting this air purifier at least 15 inches / 38 cm of clearance on all sides of the purifier to obtain the best air circulation. If you put the air purifier too close to a wall, it will affect its air circulation efficiency.
Notably, Core 300 can clean up an area of 547 ft² within 30 minutes and 219 ft² within 12 minutes i.e. Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR): 141 CFM / 240 m³/h (Smoke: 141, Dust: 140, Pollen: 145)
- Noiseless Air Cleaner as Low as 24 dB
Unlike some other types that make noise, this devise has much-reduced noise levels. It is configured in such a way that it doesn’t interfere with the serenity of the atmosphere.
It features QuietKEAP Technology which uses shock pads to reduce noise from the motor and increase abrasion resistance and extend the life of the motor. The noise level of Core 300 could be as quiet as 24dB under Sleep Mode and the maximum noise level is about 50dB at the highest fan speed.
You could also turn off the air purifier display light and opt for Sleep Mode to have a good sleep.
- Has Sleek and Award-winning Design
Levoit Core 300 Air Purifier has an attractive sleek design and also comes in a universal color, white or black. The designers were thoughtful to come up with such an idea because modern homes are generally tastefully furnished and any device that doesn’t fit in won’t be appreciated. This air purifier can easily blend in anywhere whether it is a home or an office.
This product has a measurement of 8.7L x 8.7W x 16.25H inches and weighs 7.48 pounds. This sleek and modern design makes Levoit Core 300 granted the Product Design Award from Red Dot in 2019 and the IF Design Award in 2020.
- Take a Look at the Control Panel
The control panel is at the top of the air purifier. You could adjust all the settings with just a press.
The Power button is in the middle of the control panel.
On the left-hand side, there are the Fan Speed, the Sleep Mode, and the Timer buttons. You could know the current fan speed level by the Fan Speed Indicator at the top of the control panel. There are 3 fan speed levels from level 1 to level 3.
At the bottom of the control panel, there are Timer Indicators which show the time that you set by pressing the Timer button. You can time this device to work during specific periods like say 2, 4, 6, or 8 hours. I think if I could set my own time such as 5 or 7 hours is much better. Fortunately, this smart feature is available in the Levoit Core 300S model with a more expensive price tag.
On the right-hand side, there are the Display Lock, the Check Filter Indicator, and the Display Light buttons. The Display Lock allows you to lock the display buttons so that your children or pets cannot change the setting by pressing the buttons accidentally. You could press the Display Light to turn off the light of the control panel so that you could have a good sleep.
Lastly, the Check Filter Indicator could notify you that it’s time to replace your filter. When I notice that the noise level increases or the airflow decreases while the air purifier is on, I will replace the entire filter immediately even if the Check Filter Indicator doesn’t turn on. Usually, I’ll clean the pre-filter layer regularly and replace the entire filter every 6 months.
- The Device is Fully Certified
Levoit Core 300 Air Purifier boasts certification from Energy Star, California Air Resources Board (CARB) for the indoor category, and also the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
How Does Levoit Core 300 Air Purifier Compare With Others in the Segment?
However, although the Levoit Core 300 Air Purifier belongs to the elite in terms of effectiveness and design, it is less expensive.
Also, some users have reported having to change the filters only a couple of times in over 30 months yet it continued to perform at optimal capacity.
What About its Cons?
There are always two sides to any coin, therefore Levoit Core 300 Air Purifier ought to have its cons too. However, so far, reports about this air purifier haven’t been damning at all, at least not yet. Nevertheless, this purifier costs about $100 whereas one can find other purifiers costing less, although they’re likely not to be as good as this product.
In my opinion, it is better to have the smart control ability to program when it turns on, set time and change fan speed, etc. However, Levoit Core 300 doesn’t provide such smart functions. Fortunately, another similar model, Core 300S features the smart function via a mobile app but certainly, it is more expensive.
My Final Verdict – Powerful Efficiency with Award-winning Design and Affordable Price
Admittedly, it’s tempting to recommend air purifiers that cost less, after all, no one wants to spend more for something they can get cheaper. However, such an idea can be counterproductive. It doesn’t make sense to buy a cheap air purifier only to discover it isn’t effective.
Also, Levoit Core 300 is a HEPA air purifier instead of a UV purifier. One challenge most UV purifiers have is the fact that they usually emit ozone in varying degrees. The danger associated with UV light is the main reason why the World Health Organization (WHO) warned against its use whether in purifiers or as a sterilizer for hands or other parts of the body.
Even small levels of ozone in the air, within confined spaces, can lead to chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing, and throat irritation among others.
Lastly, an air purifier that can last for several years while requiring just changing its filters a couple of times, is the real deal. I recommend replacing the filter every 6-8 months to maintain its high efficiency.
Based on the factors mentioned above, Levoit Core 300 Air Purifier is recommendable. Don’t just take my word, there are more than 80% of 55,000 Amazon’s customers gave a 5-star rating to this air purifier. Overall, the rating of the Levoit Core 300 air purifier is 4.7 out of 5 stars.
Bonus: If you want some smart features and to remotely control your air purifier via mobile apps, I would recommend you to take a look at the same product line of the Levoit Core 300 air purifier. They are Levoit Core 200S, Core 300S, Core 400S, and Core 600S but please be ready for paying more for the advanced features. They are all above $100 on Amazon except the Core 200S.
